Some frequently asked questions:

Who is ASTA?
This is the non-profit American Sail Training Association founded in 1973 and located in Newport, RI. ASTA's mission is to encourage character building through sail training, promote sail training to the American public, and support education under sail.

Will there be a selection process?
We hope that this will not be required. We hope that will be enough berths on the various legs so that each potential trainee will be able to have a berth on board their chosen leg of the Tall Ship Events. At this time, however, there are no guarantees.

Safety Issues?
Safety is a primary issue for all the Tall Ship Events. All trainees will be briefed upon arrival on LARINDA. Safety harnesses are provided on board, along with life jackets and liferafts. There are also lifebouys on board with lights attached, which can be used for "man overboard". Regular safety drills for all crew are required.

What are the costs?
Passenger $200 per day which includes food on board and a berth.
Trainee $140 per day which includes food on board and a berth.
A 50% deposit is required with application and the balance is due upon boarding.
A surcharge may apply for Sail Parades and Special Events.
